MLS® Therapeutic Laser

MLS® Laser Therapy is a painless, non-invasive and safe therapy. Light is used to accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. The laser beam is moved over the skin so that the light energy (photons) penetrates deep into the tissue to create a powerful therapeutic anti-inflammatory, anti-oedema and pain relief effect, speeding up the healing process at the same time.

Pain free, non-invasive MLS® Therapeutic Laser

MLS® stands for Multiwave Locked System which means it combines continuous and pulsed light of different wavelengths together. Each different wavelength has a different effect, one ensures it penetrates deeply, another enhances the pain effect, and another particularly enhances the anti-inflammatory and anti-oedema effects. They all work together to strengthen each other’s effects.

The MLS® Laser has been developed and tested following a strict course of clinical research, so there is data to back up its effectiveness and safety.

How does the MLS® Therapeutic Laser work?

The light of different wave lengths work together to improve circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area, clearing toxins and inflammatory mediators. This increases metabolic rate in the cells which accelerates tissue repair and cell growth. This creates an optimal healing environment which in turn:

  • reduces pain
  • leads to rapid healing of superficial lesions (wounds/sores)
  • reduces inflammation, oedema, and tissue swelling
  • reduces muscle spasms
  • increases the rate of healing of damaged tissue
  • reduces scar tissue formation.

Injured and damaged cells are targeted preferentially because they more readily accept the photons of light whereas healthy cells don’t need the extra energy.

What conditions is MLS® Therapeutic Laser useful for?

MLS® Laser therapy is suitable for treating numerous conditions, including:

  • Head: Rhinitis, Sinusitis, Ear infections, Haematomas
  • Mouth: Dental Extractions, Gingivitis, Stomatitis
  • Neck: Kennel Cough, Intervertebral Disc Disease
  • Back: Arthritis, Intervertebral Disc Disease
  • Skin: Dermatitis, Post surgical incisions, Infected and chronic wounds/ ulcers/sores, Bug bites, Contusions/Haematomas/Swellings
  • Hips: Hip Dysplasia/Arthritis, Chronic Pain, Lameness
  • Perineum/Tail: Anal Gland problems, Anal furunculosis, Trauma, Tail Fractures
  • Stifle: Post Surgery, Arthritis, Tendinitis, Total or Partial Cruciate rupture
  • Internal: Cystitis, Inflammatory Bowel disease, Feline asthma
  • Limbs: Lick Granulomas, Arthritis, Fractures, Sprains/Strains, Trauma, Neuropathies

What benefits might I see from the treatment?

The benefits will depend on the condition being treated.

For a dog with arthritis: Owners report improved demeanour, decreased stiffness, increased willingness to exercise with even reducing the dose of pain relief medication.

Wounds will heal quicker with less pain and inflammation. This includes chronic wounds and surgical wounds.

Lick granulomas would be expected to shrink in size and the inflammation decrease.

Treatment of ear infections can lead to decreased inflammation and pain levels making topical ear medication easier to give.

What treatment course will my pet need?

The length of the session will depend on the size of the area being treated and can take up to half an hour for large areas. You can stay with your pet for the duration of the treatment. The number of treatments required will vary depending on the underlying problem. Initially the treatment course can be intensive, with two to three treatments a week in the first two weeks. If the condition is a short term problem and has resolved, the treatment would end at this point. If your pet has an ongoing condition such as arthritis, the treatment course can be tailored to response and done as necessary. Initially we advise a treatment 2 weeks after the initial course, then again at 4 weeks, followed by every 6 weeks.

Can this treatment be combined with other medical treatments?

It is likely that for some conditions your pet will be on other medications, for example anti-inflammatories for arthritis. Laser therapy is safe in combination with most treatments. Often we expect a reduction in reliance on pain medication when being treated with MLS® Laser. Cases can be discussed in more detail with the vet or nurse before starting treatment.

Are there any conditions that mean this treatment is not suitable for my pet?

This treatment is safe for most conditions and beneficial in the treatment of many. It should not be used for pets with cancer as speeding up the metabolic rate of cancer cells could lead to increased growth rate of these unwanted cells.
